LOVES PARK, ILL. — (Sept. 13, 2022) — The Superhero Center for Autism invites the public to an open house from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at its facility, 4205 Galleria in Loves Park.

The center, which offers support, education, and resources for individuals with autism and other special needs and their families, has started regular gym hours for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic limited its ability to serve children and their families. Use of the facility is free for families who have a child with a documented special need that can benefit from a sensory gym experience.

“We’re excited to again be able to offer a safe place for kids with autism and special needs to play and be themselves now that some pandemic restrictions have eased,” said Billy Kulpa, vice president of the Superhero Center. “It’s great to see so many familiar faces returning, but we know that there are many other families that can benefit from our facility. We want them to know we’re a resource and welcoming community for them.”

In addition to touring the Superhero Center facility, open house attendees can learn about volunteer opportunities and purchase tickets for the 6th Annual Masquerade Ball, which will be held Oct. 15 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Rockford. It’s one of two fundraising events — in addition to a 5k — the center puts on each year. Tickets to the ball will be offered at a discounted rate during the open house event.

“We’re 100% volunteer-run, which means every penny we raise at our events goes to keeping our facility open and offering programming for our superhero community,” said Kira Carte, the Center’s director of events. “The Masquerade Ball is a great night of dinner, dancing, drinks and a silent auction that goes a long way toward helping us serve as many children and families as possible.”
